Rumah-rumah di sepanjang kanal macan dimiliki orang-orang ternama. Bahkan ada rumah yang dimiliki oleh seorang Gubernur Jenderal atau mantan Gubernur Jenderal. Tuan Willem van Outhoorn contohnya, tinggal disini enam belas tahun sampai kematiannya. Dia tinggal di Tijgersgracht setelah putrinya menikah dengan direktur umum Joan van Hoorn. Dia sangat senang ketika menantunya itu menjadi gubernur, karena rumahnya di jaga  empat belas serdadu di bawah seorang letnan. Selain itu pernah tinggal Dirk van Cloon dan Reinier de Klerk.

The houses along the canal tiger were owned by famous people. In fact, there had been a house owned by a General Governor or former General Governor. Mr. Willem van Outhoorn for example, lived here sixteen years until his death. He lived in Tijgersgracht after his daughter was married to the general director Joan van Hoorn. He was very happy when his son in law became governor, since then his house was guarded by fourteen men under a lieutenant. Here also lived Dirk van Cloon and Reinier de Klerk.

Dua pulau kecil yang lain adalah Gili Meno dan Gili Air. Pulau ini sangat kecil, untuk mengelilinginya dengan cidomo atau dokar yang ditarik kuda hanya butuh waktu sekitar satu Jam. Jalan-jalannyapun sempit hanya selebar lima meter, bahkan pada ruas tertentu lebarnya hanya tiga meter. Selain itu, jalan-jalan ini masih merupakan jalan tanah berpasir.

Gili for people of Lombok Island means a very small island. Gili Trawangan is a small island of the three islands in the west of the Island of Lombok. Two other small islands are Gili Meno and Gili Air. The island is very small, to surround it with cidomo or horse-drawn buggy only takes about one hours. The streets are too narrow only five meters wide, even on a specific segment merely three meters wide. In addition, these streets is still a sandy dirt road. But unthinkably this island developed into tourist place with all the amenities of modern life.

Walaupun tinggal di rumah Tan Tion Qua, Poh An bekerja sebagai  Pegawai Kapiten Nie Hoe Kong dan di tugaskan di pabrik gula daerah Ommelanden Batavia. Kapiten Nie Hoe Kong adalah seorang raja pedagang gula yang memiliki banyak pabrik gula dan arak. Poh An adalah kepercayaannya dalam mengelola pabrik-pabrik tadi. Pekerjaannya sehari-hari adalah mengontrol pabrik dan membagikan upah harian kepada para pekerja. Gula dan Arak yang dihasilkan sebagian dijual di Batavia dan sebagian dikirim kepelabuhan untuk dijual keluar kota.

Although staying at Tan Tion Qua’s house, Poh An worked for Kapitan Nie Hoe Kong and assigned in a sugar factory in Ommelanden Batavia. Poh An was whom Nie Hoe Kong could rely on managing his sugar factories. His daily work was to control the factory and distributed daily wages to the workers. One part of sugar and rice wine produced were sold in Batavia and another part were sent to the port to be sold out of the city. His work led him acquainted with the workers and slaves from Bali.

Tan Poh An was Tan Jing Bing’s best friend since childhood and they loved to play in the river.

Tapi ada kejadian ketika penghuni dari tepi Kanal Macan buru-buru ke rumahnya, dan kejadian ini sering berlanjut ke Kanal Buaya. Saat itulah para budak dari dalam rumah-rumah membawa tangki berisi feses (karena jamban belum ada) kemudian membuangnya ke tongkang Tionghoa di kanal itu. Jadi harum atau aroma bunga dari pepohonan  digantikan oleh bau amonia dari tongkang.
