Fuqing was a city full of corrupt mandarins. They were public servants whose dirty hands with money obtained under the table. In the bad year, Dragon River was revealing his gloom. The wrath of the mandarin was because of endless turbulent uprising. Actually, the era of Emperor Yong zheng in the mid of the Qing Dynasty was tinged with a lot of progress. Unfortunately, progress and prosperity were not able to reach all people, especially in southern China were still a lot of poverty. The achieved prosperity was not accompanied by a clean and honest life.

Batavia was the old name of Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. Batavia was founded in 1619 by the General Governor of East Indies Companies (VOC) Jan Pieterzoon Coen at the location that previously was the palace of Jayakarta Prince.

The old town that lies on 1,1 square Kilometer declined area suffered several tragic event on her history including the spread of Malaria and the worse tragedy where ten thousand Chinese were slaughter by the Dutch. The town was burned down and after the tragedy the Chinese should live outside of the town wall.

Di dalam tembok kota Batavia semua rumah-rumah nya adalah rumah toko dan rumah teras. Dari peta tahun 1733 tergambar dengan jelas bahwa semua rumah didalam tembok kota tidak memiliki halaman dan berbatasan langsung dengan Jalan. Ini menunjukan wilayah didalam tembok memiliki kepadatan yang tinggi. Itulah mengapa para pejabat VOC membangun rumah-rumah baru di sepanjang Molenvliet, sekarang dinamai jalan Gajah Mada dan Jalan Hayam Wuruk.

Berbeda dengan rumah toko di Pecinan yang pintu bagian depan terbuka selebar toko, di Batavia ruko-ruko terdiri dari beberapa jendela dan pintu yang lebar.

Within the walls of Batavia city, the houses were shop-houses and terrace-houses. From the map in 1733 illustrated clearly that all the houses within the walls did not have a yard and directly adjacent to the street. It shows the area within the walls had a high density. That's why VOC officials built new houses along Molenvliet, now named Gajah Mada and Jalan Hayam Wuruk streets.

Jakarta bukanlah tempat yang menarik para wisatawan seperti Bali. Walaupun ada jalan-jalan yang indah seperti Jalan Sudirman dan Jalan Thamrin, dua jalan ini bukanlah tempat turis berbelanja. Satu-satunya tujuan wisata adalah Kota Tua Jakarta atau yang dulu dinamai Batavia. Ada sedikit bangunan yang masih bagus kondisinya, tetapi lingkungannya rusak. Ini adalah tantangan pemerintah untuk merevitalisasi kota tua Jakarta.

Jakarta is not a place that interests many tourists like Bali. Although there are tidy streets such as Sudirman and Thamrin Streets, they are not tourist shopping streets. The only tourism point of interest is the old Jakarta town or previously called Batavia. Since the town has been deteriorated and many buildings such as the castle that supposed to be a tourist’s point of interest have been destroyed, a few tourists are willing to visit it. There are a few old buildings that are still in good condition, however the environment is worsened.

Batavia adalah tempat pertemuan kebudayaan Barat dan Timur. Kebudayaan Barat dibawa oleh Belanda dan ethik Eropa lainnya, sementara itu kebudayaan Timur dibawa oleh orang Tionghoa, orang Arab, orang India serta kelompok etnik lain di Nusantara.

Di abad ke 17, di dalam tembok kota tinggal orang Belanda, orang Tionghoa dan para budaknya. Mereka hidup dengan mewah sejalan dengan kotanya yang makmur. Kemewahan itu dapat dilihat dari lukisan kuno  di mana tuan dan nonya berpakaian rapi, di temani budak-budaknya di belakang sambil memegangi payung dan Alkitab, pergi ke gereja.

Batavia was a meeting point between the Western culture and the Eastern culture. The western culture was brought by the Dutch, and other European ethnic groups, while the eastern culture was brought mostly by the Chinese, the Arab, the Indian and other ethnic groups in the archipelago.

In the 17th century, inside the town wall lived the Dutch, the Chinese and the slaves. They lived glamorously along the prosperity of the town.
