The rise of Jakarta Old CityKompas 18 Maret 2015

Today March 18, 2015 Kompas daily on page 27 showing very encouraging article that the revitalization of Jakarta old town shows a step forward. But it is part of this paper that makes us doubt because it turns out a lot of homework in the old town as many disorderly and dirty.

We know that commuter train from Jakarta to Bogor, Bekasi, Tangerang or Serpong before is a bad commuter train.

Toko MerahToko Merah

Toko Merah means “red-store”. The store was called Toko Merah because all frames were in red. Not only the frame was in red, the furniture inside was also in red. The red color is the characteristic of Chinese-ness similar to the Chinese temple. Because everything is red and its function as a store, then it was named Toko Merah. This house in the mid-19th century was owned by Oey Liaw Kong. He opened a shop in the next Kali Besar (Ciliwung River) which at that time was still crowded as the lifeblood of commerce. The New red brick was added in 1923 when Bank voor Indie owned the building.

4. The TrafficTiger canal now the north Batavia Station

Traffic in Batavia was canels that played a major role as a transportation infrastructure. Residents of Tiger canal mostly have their own boats moored outside his home. Like Venetian gondolas which was at anchor off the Grand Canal to the palace of the nobility; In Batavia there were also boats rowed by Chinese boatman. With a fee of two cents the boat would had taken passengers anywhere.

Tiger canal was a place where the townsfolk relax until late in the evening. They sat on the edge of the canal while smoking a pipe and drinking a glass of wine.

Usaha perluasan dengan menambah kamar-kamar baru diadakan pada tahun 1898. Sembilan tahun kemudian ditambah dengan sejumlah pavilyun baru. Bagian depan yang besar dengan lobby yang luas dibangun pada tahun 1931. Sedang rumah asli yang tampak sebagai bangunan induk dalam foto-foto kuno pada pertukaran abad ini, di tahun 1970an masih berdiri di bagian belakang, dikenal sebagai "rumah merah".

Sejak masa itu sampai tahun 1950an, Hotel des Indes merupakan hotel kelas satu yang tiada duanya dalam prestise dan kedudukannya di Jakarta. Setelah itu kedudukannva makin merosot.

Walaupun tinggal di rumah Tan Tion Qua, Poh An bekerja sebagai  Pegawai Kapiten Nie Hoe Kong dan di tugaskan di pabrik gula daerah Ommelanden Batavia. Kapiten Nie Hoe Kong adalah seorang raja pedagang gula yang memiliki banyak pabrik gula dan arak. Poh An adalah kepercayaannya dalam mengelola pabrik-pabrik tadi. Pekerjaannya sehari-hari adalah mengontrol pabrik dan membagikan upah harian kepada para pekerja. Gula dan Arak yang dihasilkan sebagian dijual di Batavia dan sebagian dikirim kepelabuhan untuk dijual keluar kota.

We know the road from Anyer to Panarukan linking various cities in Java which eventually became the northern coast line. Daendels road construction done at the expense of tens of thousands of human lives has led to the emergence of the towns along this road. This road is the main Java island economic line which if disturbed would lead to disruption of the economic pulse of the whole country. We also know the Banteng Square, the Presidential and Vice Presidential Palaces, Immanuel Church, and various buildings around Monas, the national park.

What made astonishing for Jing Bing was the surgical operation where the sick patient was put in bed  and the surgeon opened the sick part of the body and healed. He never know this treatment before. But it was very unfortunate for the young chirugijn (surgeon), they made a lot of failure that ends in death. Only doctor Samuel Christiaan Kriel a graduate from Leiden university was a top surgeon. Although he was still young but has a lot of experience. He was a good doctor, very humble and happy to be friends with everyone, including with Jing Bing.

While the people passing under the Pailou – the city Gate - that stood since a few hundred years ago. They were usually farmers who bring vegetables to the city. Indeed, outside the area of Fuqing city had a prosperous land, with rice fields extended fulfilling people’s daily live. But the government seemed to ignore this prosperity.

Who says grassroots in Jakarta only cause social and environmental problems, as well as littering the streets and the sidewalks? They are a group of people that is excluded from modern city life. Similar to the old city that is dull, the paint of its old frames had long been peeled. They are marginalized by the new part of town, shiny granite floors, frames of aluminum, dazzling glass-walled. This paper will discuss grassroots from a different angle. Grassroots whose talents is through the brush strokes on canvas, sketching pencil scribbles on paper which have artistic value.

Batavian Shop-house and Terrace-house (2)

Within the walls of Batavia city, the houses were shop-houses and terrace-houses. From the map in 1733 illustrated clearly that all the houses within the walls did not have a yard and directly adjacent to the street. It shows the area within the walls had a high density.
