Istri tukang kelontong itu menjadi "simpanan" kesayangan Tambahsia. Ibunya khawatir anaknya akan menjadikan janda itu istrinya yang sah. Maka Nyonya Oey membujuk anaknya agar mau menikah baik-baik. Barangkali seperti orang tua pada zaman itu, ia juga mengharapkan kebinalan anaknya akan berkurang setelah menikah secara resmi. Tambahsia tidak menolak saran itu, tetapi mengajukan syarat. Ia harus menentukan sendiri pilihannya. Pada masa itu tidak lazim bahwa seorang muda menentukan jodohnya sendiri. Biasanya orang tuanyalah yang mencarikannya.

Sekalipun masih terbilang remaja, Tambah sudah terkenal sebagai lelaki hidung belang. Konon orang sampai menyembunyikan anak daranya, karena khawatir terlihat oleh Oey Tambah atau kaki-tangannya. Umumnya ia mempergunakan kekuatan uang untuk mencapai maksudnya, dan biasanya berha­sil. Terkadang ia pun mempergunakan kekerasan. Lebih tepat-nya, para kaki-tangannyalah yang melakukan kekerasan atau segala cara, karena mengharapkan hadiah besar dari tuannya.

In the meantime, Tambahsia act became worse. What troubled the Chinese community was that it disturbed other people’s wife. Although still fairly teenager, Tambah was already famous as a masher. Oey Tambah yang masih remaja boleh dikata kejatuhan harta karun sebesar itu tanpa pernah bekerja apa-apa. Rupanya harta tiban itu mengguncangkan jiwa remajanya. Sepeninggal ayahnya ia makin menunjukkan tabiat buruk dan tingkah laku yang tak terpuji. Agaknya dia sama sekali tak berniat untuk melanjutkan usaha perdagangan ayahnya. Apalagi ambisi untuk menjadi pemuka masyarakat, yang menurut pahamnya hanya menjadi budak orang lain.

Salah satu ulah menghamburkan harta ayahnya ialah kebiasaan-nya yang menjadi mitos bagi orang-orang sezamannya.

Selesai lelang Oey dihampiri Mayor Tan Eng Goan, salah seorang pemimpin masyarakat Tionghoa terkemuka di Batavia masa itu. Pemuka itu mengajaknya pulang bersama naik kereta. Persahabatan antara keduanya meningkatkan gengsi Oey di mata masyarakat Tionghoa. Pada suatu ketika Tan mengusulkan kepada pemerintah Belanda agar Oey diangkat menjadi letnan dan anggota Dewan Tionghoa (Kong Koan).

Oey mempunyai empat orang anak. Yang pertama seorang putri, telah dinikahkan dengan putra bupati Pekalongan, yang kelak akan menggantikan ayahnya.

2. Become a ‘Leutenant’ in a short time.

After the auction Oey was approached by Major Tan Eng Goan, one of the leading Chinese community leaders in Batavia at that time. The major asked to go him home in his horse-cart. The friendship between the two increases Oey's prestige in the eyes of the Chinese community. Oey had four children. The first was a daughter, married to the son of the Pekalongan’s regent, who would later succeed his father.
